Supporting Children’s Sensory and Motor Needs During the Pandemic
Monday, November 16 and Wednesday, November 18, 2020
7 PM EST
Webinar Facilitator Holli Hollifield
Even before the pandemic, it was clear that more and more children entering our classrooms were having difficulty focusing their attention, keeping their hands to themselves, retaining information, and/or regulating their emotions. At the same time, we have seen an increase in children who become easily overwhelmed either by loud sounds or slight changes in the routine. In this presentation, I will elaborate on why all of these observed behaviors could have their “root” in a sensory system needing more input. We will explore how action research led to the development of my Movement Curriculum which aims to support the child’s sensory and motor development. We will discuss why the “pandemic child” may need even more support. I will offer you not only numerous movement suggestions for your classrooms but also resources and ideas for virtual instruction.
Holli Andrews earned both a Bachelor’s of Science in Biology and a Master’s of Education, specializing in Early Childhood Education. In 2002, Holli received an AMS Early Childhood Certificate through the New Gate Center for Montessori Studies in Sarasota, Florida. Holli’s career includes many years as a Montessori Guide as well as experience as the coordinator of a Montessori Physical Education program, After School Coordinator, and Montessori Specialist; supporting children with special needs. She has been a presenter at several Montessori conferences.
THE GREAT LEAP: FROM CHILDHOOD TO ADOLESCENCE
Date: Thursday, December 3rd, 2020 Time: 7 PM – 8:30 EST
Webinar Presenter: Jocelyn Swanson, Secondary Level Director, Center for Guided Montessori Studies
What happens as children make the great leap into the third plane and become a young adult? How do we guide them as their focus turns from academic to social, as the organized sixth-year learner embraces chaos, and as their new level of abstraction collides with distraction? Would we have it any other way? Most days, no! So how do we support the fascinating development of the adult, “shed omnipotence” in order to become the “joyful observer, ” and realize the independent, creative, adaptable, and valorized individual?
We’ll look at structure, purpose, and spirit and specific tools to make these three elements escorts in the great and important leap from childhood to adolescence.
