Sarasota University announces the inauguration of a new lecture/discussion series called “The SU Monthly Colloquium.” Each month on the third Wednesday at 7 pm EST, Sarasota University will invite scholars, experts, and friends to gather to discuss a specific topic of value to Montessori educators and leaders. This will be a virtual event held on zoom and open to the public.
The first SU Colloquium will be held on Wednesday, January 19. The topic will be “The History of Montessori in the US”, presented by Tim Seldin.
The Montessori movement first came to the United States in 1911 thanks to wide-spread interest sparked by S.S McClure who published a popular series of articles in McClure’s magazine about Montessori in Europe and arranged for her first national speaking tour. As we celebrate the 115th anniversary of the establishment of the first Casa dei Bamini in San Lorenzo, we will take a look at how and why the initial enthusiasm for Montessori’s work faded and her ideas became at most a footnote in the history of education in the United States. We will also consider how a bright sassy young mother, Nancy McCormack Rambush, a Hollywood star named Tom Laughlin, and the press and television set off the second wave of the Montessori movement that continues to this day. Finally, we will take a look at the spread of Montessori’s ideas throughout the country, it’s slow but steady adaptation within the public sector, the Montessori homeschool movement, inclusion, and the forces that seem to favor and challenge Montessori in the years ahead.
